Senators, scholars denounce Bush’s use of ’signing statements’

A bipartisan group of senators and scholars denounced President Bush on Tuesday for using scores of so-called signing statements to reserve the right to ignore or reinterpret provisions of legislation that he has signed into law. (Read more…)

Blah blah blah… The only reason this made it into oldmedia is because Bush is requesting line item veto. While I didn’t look elsewhere to see if this has been under investigation for long (and it probably has), it’s irritating that congress is now in 100% mediaspinland where they believe that they can be effective if there is a blowout happening in the press. And they might be right.

Part of me thinks exclusive use of line item veto over signing statements would be better because at least we would have a more clear picture of what our executive branch is up to. Those signing statements are creepy and vague and are a top to bottom get out of jail free card.

And that is sad and scary… that I would somehow feel more comfortable with the idea of giving the decider explicit absolute and terrifying power rather than just the… ya know, wink and nod absolute and terrifying power he wields today.

There are monsters under the bed, and they wear business blue blazers.
