Homeless woman’s killers sentenced

Depressing thoughts to start the weekend…

Two men received prison sentences Friday of 15 years to life for beating and kicking a homeless woman to death in Berkeley.

Jarell Maurice Johnson, 19, of San Leandro and Derrell Lamont Morgan, 19, of Berkeley were each found guilty in September of second-degree murder for attacking Maria King, 49, at about 1 a.m. Feb. 8, 2005, behind a secondhand clothing store near University Avenue and California Street.

King was a university graduate and a legal writer who became homeless after a back injury, the loss of her job and a dispute with the landlord of the Oakland residential hotel where she lived. (Read more…)
