How truly sad. I remember nights when Doc Severinson - a monster trumpet player in his own right - was off touring and Tommy led The Tonight Show Band - an uncommonly talented group of musicians. On these occasions, Johnny would make a point of teasing Tommy on many points - how quiet he was, how conservatively he was dressed. The deadpan looks Tommy would shoot back at Johnny were a crackup. The more sarcastic Johnny was to him, the more deadpan his expression. Doc would often showcase him, or compliment him on an arrangement on the show. Tommy Newsom was a fine, fine musician, and will be greatly missed. RIP, Mr. Newsom.
