sick in neverland

After my gross extortion for return of iPhone fun friday, I ran away to my pal Erik’s place in Tahoe to detox from city and work and the daily grind for a few days. That’s when the cold that had been incubating since about Wednesday last decided to settle right in. Here I am in paradise–sunny, plenty of cold breeze–and all I want to do is watch movies. So that’s what I am doing.

Yay and bleh all at once.

How much do we love a home cooked meal and awesome company?

When I started at my last job I bought a video iPod and started subscribing to a bunch of podcasts. I started listening to:

  1. Fox and the city (which referred me to)
  2. Yeast Radio (which referred me to)
  3. PNS Explosion (still a favorite, which referred me to)
  4. The Daily Purge (still a favorite, cohosted by Rob Lindley who also cohosts)
  5. How Much Do We Love (the primary hostess being Sara)

Then, seemingly randomly, I got an e-mail from Sara asking me why she found pics of a particular corporate christmas party in my flickr stream. Because she was ALSO at that same party, and she is friends with a coworker of mine.

Shortly after that was the next year’s corporate holiday party, and we decided to meet up, drink, and have a fabulous time. We have since hung out a couple of times and are becoming friends.

The internets are a strange and wonderful series of tubes.

Last night she invited me to her new place, and she cooked a fantastic meal: NY Strip Steaks, broiled beets, baby broccoli, fresh corn, and a yummy blue cheese sauce to schmear on anything that would hold still. Even better I got an EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEEK of the winner of her recent Summer Cocktail Recipe Contest, which I am simply not at liberty to divulge, but I can report was de-effing-licious. I brought the liquor portion (inexpensive vodka, but the bottle was super cute and she loves her some touch-of-fancy, done and done), ice, and mixers.

We also watched the latest very “meh” episode of So You Think You Can Dance, which is normally entertaining, but not so much last night. Almost all of the dancing was underwhelming, yet the judges were screaming and hooting and gushing like I have never seen. We were both wondering if we would have enjoyed it by ourselves, but I am pretty sure that’s not the case. Neil didn’t even take off his shirt to redeem himself. Meh.

Thanks goodness for dessert, which was her fresh made plum cobbler–with plums she plucked from her backyard–served with vanilla whipped cream. That was a nice finish.

Thanks for a wonderful evening, Sara!

Funny colleagues

After reading this:

You Brits or well-heeled international richies may want to check this out:

My colleague and I are in the property business and we bought a piano from the Late Freddie Mercury’s Family. The piano has been kept for a long time in a house in the Feltham Area. Apparently Freddie used to play on this when he began touring. I have verification by way of a provenance letter from Freddie’s mother clearly stating the history.Wood colour with a seat. It does need tuning however I think.

Freddie Mercury (born Farrokh Bulsara; 5 September 1946 – 24 November 1991) was a British rock musician and songwriter, best known as the lead singer of the rock band Queen. He is remembered for his vocal abilities and charisma as a live performer. As a songwriter, he composed many international hits, including “Killer Queen”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Somebody to Love”,
“We Are the Champions” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” (See post)

I yelled out “OMG FREDDY MERCURY’S PIANO IS FOR SALE ZOMGLOL!”

*silence for 2 seconds*

A coworker in the next aisle: “…IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN”

*laughter from everyone in 2 aisles*

BBQ

M and J took me to D’s BBQ yesterday. It was a ridiculous sausage fest. Monica was the only girl. All the boys were stupidly pretty (except for J, who is cute, but my housemate so idon’tlikehimthatway). M made lovely homemade salsa and storemade margaritas. She’s mexican so it was guaranteed authentic. Then D brought out the ribs.

I’ll eat just about anything cooked on a grill and made of meat. Usually lots. But I only had one. I didn’t think they were bad, but probably very very bad for me. THey had been smoked low and long, so I figured all the bacteria were dead. At least I hoped so since the meat (pork) was mostly raw. It was also was lightly coated in a yummy sauce that was a cross between a very sweet bbq sauce and lighter fluid. It was really good, but probably gave me cancer.

Oh well.

I decided to do my own today. I have yet to figure out a good and repeatable recipe. but I usually do ok winging it. Today the best looking meat at safeway was country ribs: mostly boneless, about the sze of a pork chop, LOTS of connective tissue.

The recipe today is like so:

  1. Wash and dry ribs (1 largeish package)
  2. Rub with oil
  3. Rub with steak seasoning (coarse salt, pepper, garlic, onion, and who knows what)
  4. Stack fat side up in dutch oven thingy
  5. Pour on random amount red wine vinegar
  6. Pour on random amount worcesteshire
  7. Pour on entire bottle of Cattleman’s BBQ sauce and massage into the cracks of the meat mountain
  8. Cover and put in 300 degree oven
  9. Check it in 2 hours and cook some more or possibly cook uncovered for a bit.

How much do we love hanging out?

Last night my friend Sara and I went out for drinks, dinner, and random stuff. The original plan was drinks, but as we solidified plans it ended up into mani-pedis with a couple of her other friends who were neat people, then on to drinks which ended up being tapas. We had a lovely evening.

One o the conversations was her enjoyment of Cash Cab. I’d never heard of it, and didn’t entirely believe it when she told me. As I work from home today, Cash Cab came up on the toob, and I em enjoying it immensely.

Sara has a fabulous podcast with her friend Rob. It’s called “How much do we love…” and it’s the best and funniest podcast out there that isn’t generally mean spirited or nsfw. Check it out.
