An early christmas present from kringlebush: EPA Denies Calif. Greenhouse Gas Waiver

The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday slapped down California’s bid for first-in-the-nation greenhouse gas limits on cars, trucks and SUVs, refusing the state a waiver that would have allowed those restrictions to take effect.

“The Bush administration is moving forward with a clear national solution — not a confusing patchwork of state rules,” EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson told reporters on a conference call. “I believe this is a better approach than if individual states were to act alone.” (Read More)

There you have it: delicious greasy lumps of war-coal for everyone.

That EPA admin’s comments stink of a Karen Hughes’ condescending 3-word bumpersticker bullshit campaign. I’m reminded of commercials for as-seen-on-tv products, trying to sell me a solution for a problem that never existed in a tone that actually makes me question my sanity:

[Narrator]: “The Vac-u-stick 3000. How often has this happened to you?”

Cut to…

[Scene of woman trying to get one of those clunky, old fashioned 300 lb. canister vacuums out of closet, only to get tangled up in the cord and hoses, fall into a tank full of pirhana, break the glass, and stab her eyes out]

Cut to…

[Mysteriously resurrected woman reading from cue cards]: “WHY… … … DOES. VACUUMING… … … HAVE. TO. BE… … SO COMPLICATED. AND. DANGEROUS? … … … … … OW.”

Holiday cynicism

Tis the season.

No, not Christmas, but politics, terror, and the war on everything. What fabulous surprises does Kris Kringlebush have in store for America’s collective hearth stockings in his last holiday season?

  • Proof from Ann Coulter that Democrats really are stupid yet diabolically evil traitors (Hillary has been having islamist lesbian botox abortion sex parties within spitting distance of a Gymboree!!^&#$)?
  • A fancy update to that tired security advisory system (Threat level: Rudolph Red)?
  • The “discovery” of a terrorist plot to harm the blond and blue eyed goodness of the heartland (Al Qaida queenpin codename “Mrs. Klaws” caught anthraxing our chirrun’s snickerdoodles)?
  • America’s most wanted criminal captured (George and Bandar, doing a bit of last minute Christmas shopping, smoked bin Laden out of his hole and got those nice folks at Macy’s to wrap him up in a shiny bow)?
  • News that the “surge” is working (Last month had more suicide bombings in about 4 years, so let’s surge some more, this time with feeling!!1one!1)?

Oh, I shiver in anticipation.

Religious cannabilism

Under all circumstances, “people of faith” bashing those of other religions is just plain fucked up. I’ve found an exception: The neo-super-creepy-fundie christians are going after Romney/Mormonism, and it’s putting a microscope on the way their tiny minds work, making it crystal clear how completely inappropriate it is to have religion touch government in any way shape or form.

Help with the GOP brand

Onion News706.Article

Boehner has undertaken a study, consulting corporate image experts, to “re-brand” the party. But so far, no big ideas have emerged.

New brand? What’s wrong with the one Republicans running for president are wielding?

“We hate scary brown people because apparently hating on gays, blacks, Arabs, San Francisco, Massachusetts, and Hollywood is apparently no longer good enough.”

That one seems to fit them just fine, and it’s clearly the only “big idea” in their current arsenal. But I suspect you guys may have your own helpful suggestions.

Interesting article on Doctor Ferragamo

condi lookin fierceWhile she [Condoleeza Rice] never seemed an ideological Republican prior to her time with Bush Sr, upon her return to Stanford, many of her friends - who, interestingly, are in the main far more leftwing than she is - detected a hardening in her approach to issues such the affirmative action that had greatly assisted her own rise. She was also extremely autocratic. She was intelligent; she was always right. She believed deeply that she was God’s instrument, guided by His will. Despite her inexperience as a manager, she felt that compromise and coalition-building were an unnecessary waste of time. She could be ruthless. She accomplished much, was also feared - and, of course, she was exceptional. (Read More)

I hate television news so very very much

cnn poll. very classy.I’m watching KTVU news this morning for no reason whatsoever. Every once in awhile I turn it on to see how long I can stand to have my news chewed up, editorialized, injected with extra fear and/or religion, and regurgitated back to me. I think my current record is about 2 minutes.
The pertinent facts of the current story is this: A woman in Oakland was hit and killed by a car overnight, which did not stick around the scene of the accident or call it in or anything.

Not interesting enough for morning news apparently. Frank Somerville and the (allegedly) dickhead writers of KTVU chose to add this unnecessary bit of fluff: “at Grand avenue and Lennox, which is [tense and knowing emphasis] very close [/] to Children’s Fairyland.”

Because it could have been YOUR CHILD who was viciously run down. In the middle of the night. At 1:15am. Going to Fairyland. As they tend to do at 1:15am.

The fact that a woman was killed isn’t funny, but that the TV news is sensationalizing it is. In a terrifying way.

A few days ago I heard an interview with Mike Gravel on NPR. He noted that the American public has been kept in a state of continuous fear by our government since the beginning of the Cold War, and that the mainstream DNC candidates are not likely to change the status quo.

Evangelical Leader: Rudy Must Pledge To Appoint Anti-Abortion Attorney General - Politics on The Huffington Post

This is so beautiful. The crazyfundies are fracturing hard.

Rudy Giuliani should pledge to nominate an attorney general who opposes abortion and should agree to accept sweeping new restrictions on the practice to minimize opposition to his presidential candidacy from evangelical Christians, said Richard Land, a prominent leader of religious conservatives.

“If he did those things he would make it easier for a lot of evangelicals to choose him as the lesser of two evils,” Land, a leader of the Nashville-based Southern Baptist Convention, said in an interview on Bloomberg Television’s “Political Capital with Al Hunt.”

Still, Land said he will not personally support the former New York mayor’s candidacy. “It is a matter of individual, moral conscience,” said Land, whose group represents 16 million members. “I cannot vote for a pro-choice candidate, period.” (Read More)

Ding dong the witch is dead… Hastert Finally To Resign

*boggle*

The GOP is suffering a serious exodus… this is something like 13 or 14 that have announced intentions to retire in the last 3 months.

The Politico - Former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) is expected to announce that he plans to leave the House later this year, setting up the widely anticipated prospect of a special election to replace him, Republican sources on Capitol Hill confirmed.

Hastert initially planned to make an announcement Thursday, but has since scrapped that decision, according to one GOP aide. The former speaker, who announced his plans to retire over the summer, is still expected to leave the House some time in December, but the date of his departure - as well as his announcement - remains unclear.
