Go Running, Then Grab a Brewski

Just last night I “ran” home from work, “ran” around my house to find my driver’s license and bank card which had gone missing, then “ran” outside to catch a cab to go meet friends. I can attest to the fact that the three beers I had helped me recover.

Whatever. Cut the middleman out.

A beer after playing a game of football, a long run, or a strenuous round of golf can be good for the body, scientists say.

In a rare piece of good news for those who like a pint, Spanish researchers say beer can help someone who is dehydrated retain liquid better than water.

Prof Manuel Garzon, of Granada University, also claimed the bubbles in beer help to quench the thirst and that its carbohydrate content can help to replace lost calories. (Read More)

Dragon Beard Candy

200706232034I went to dim sum with a friend last weekend at Koi Palace in Daly City. They were having a “dragon beard candy show,” where a candy chef stands behind glass and makes this yummy treat.

He started with a golden glob of stuff which turned out to be inverted sugar. He rolled it into a perfect ball, flattened it a bit, then poked a hole through the middle. It was the same shape and size as a clear golden donut.

Next he rolled it in a tray of rice flour to keep it from getting sticky and pulled the stretched the donut gently all the way around till there was a uniform loop of about 12 inches. He doubled the loop up, spread some flour and continued the process several times until he had something resembling a loop of angel hair (the christmas decoration, not the pasta).

He then proceeded to pull strands out, put some crushed peanuts and sesame seeds on a bit of the strands and roll it all up into a nifty little package.

It does indeed look like hair, and was delighted when my friend ate a piece and ended up with strands of sugar trailing out her mouth resembling… a dragon’s beard.

The picture above was taken from https://www.yuzumura.com/t-bamboogarden-closeup.aspx. There’s more pics, and a movie of the process there as well. Fun stuff.

Harris Restaurant Has Class

An update to my beer-meets-phone-and-camera incident at Harris Restaurant -

Indeed over the past few days my phone has gone wonky. No power issues yet, but the keypad is nasty — all the buttons make horrible sucking/sticky noises now and it smells like the floor of a bar. Yum.

razr
I called Harris today and spoke to the general manager who was also very apologetic over the matter and was happy to send a check right over. I emphasized that I will hope that there are no major repercussions from a genuine accident that had been handled beautifully by the wait staff.
I’ve already ordered my new phone - a RAZR - and he was happy to cut a check for somewhere around 1/2 the price. A good deal for us all.

Cheesecake factory menu

  1. Everything is a “Special” including the entire page of hamburgers
  2. Several of the dishes contain adjectives like “Fantastic!”
  3. On the page that was apparently about chicken, there was a delightful list:

Orange Chicken
Chicken and Biscuits
Cashew Chicken
